Quiksilver Partners With The Standard Hotel

July 30, 2009

quiksilver-standartQuiksilver has partnered with André Balazs The Standard Hotels to market cobranded men’s and women’s swimsuits. The boardshorts and bikini will be distributed via poolside vending machines in the hotel’s four properties, in their boutiques and online at shopthestandard.com.

The $75 boardshorts are made in Quiksilver’s ultralightweight, “diamond dobby” stretch material, which prevents rashes, with a retro scalloped leg and packaged in a waterproof travel bag.

Each design features a “Quik City Guide” on the inside waistband, with addresses of local places of interest. The Downtown L.A. trunk features alternative art spaces in that city, the Hollywood trunk highlights independent music venues, the New York trunk lists other swimming pools to visit there and Miami features hip restaurants and cafes. The inside label on each reads “The Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver.”

The men’s swimsuits are available in even waist sizes from 30 to 36, and the black women’s bikini is available in three sizes. Quiksilver has developed an innovative vending machine as part of the partnership, so that hotel guests can purchase a swimsuit any time of the day or night.

“This is a 24-hour customer, and a lot of times they might not have a swimsuit but want to take a late-night swim, after the hotel’s boutique is closed,” noted Katz. “We are very much interested in new and progressive ways of reaching our customers.”

The 16th Annual Watermill Center Summer Benefit “Inferno”

July 28, 2009

watermill-benefit-delfina-nacho-figueras

This year’s Watermill summer benefit theme was “Inferno”. The center was a circus scene, performers enact pieces by the center’s artists-in-residence, including a fire-eater courtesy of Todd Robbins; costumed children operating an aptly named giant “Spider Puppet” by Sophia Jones, and, just before dinner, showgirls and an aerial act from C. Ryder Cooley.

“Every year we try to do something different from the last,” explained the arts organization’s founder, Robert Wilson, as he greeted arrivals along with Isabella Rossellini.

Hence, perhaps, the “flaming” dress code which got sartorial sparks flying with lots of red and orange frocks accessorized with devil horns, headdresses and, inexplicably, a lot of Ascot-style hats. There were also real flames, of course, in the form of festive tiki torches, which lined the path through the forest along which art installations were displayed.

A crowd that included Calvin Klein, Christophe de Menil, Amalia Dayan, Debbie Bancroft, actress Laura Harring and two of the New York “Real Housewives,” Countess Luann de Lesseps and Ramona Singer.

$1.4 million were earn for the center. Simon de Pury led a live auction, including a piece by Terence Koh and a portrait of Ingrid Bergman that her daughter Rossellini helped hawk.  Afterwards, Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, Richard Meier and Nacho Figueras listened to Martha Wainwright perform before the DJs took over and dancing began.

The Webster Opens in Miami

July 27, 2009

The Webster
919 Collins Ave
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 674-7899

The store carries men’s and women’s ready-to-wear and accessories from brands including Marc Jacobs, YSL, Lanvin and Maison Martin Margiela. Its dark walls are punctuated with panels of vintage wallpapers in floral patterns, whereas those in psychedelic geometrics decorate the first floor, which carries swimwear, sneakers and jeans from Acne, Neil Barrett and Bronzette, a French collection of Brigitte Bardot-inspired bikinis in ditsy florals. The third floor’s metallic panels set off fine jewelry and watches such as vintage Rolexes, Aurélie Bidermann’s custom looks and Azagury-Partridge’s rings of ruby lips or gold and emerald snakes whose mouths move to hiss.

Carrying brands that are exclusive to the U.S. — or at least Florida — as well as custom and runway pieces, such as Trussardi’s fringed bag in a special color or a minidress with draping in a black-and-blue print from Balenciaga’s fall collection, are ways the Webster aims to buck the recession, according to the three partners.

“We aren’t trying to please every market and age, but are concentrating on editing the most desirable items that are destined to be handed down to children,” said Heriard-Dubreuil.

But even they were surprised when Balmain’s women’s wear and shoes sold out within weeks — a studded, bustier minidress retailing for more than $19,000 awaited purchase on opening day — and the strength of demand meant the store expanded into men’s, a category led by Trussardi.

“Trussardi has really resonated across the board with all ages, and customers recognize its value and quality,” said Dechnik.

Amber Valletta to Launch Clothing Line

July 27, 2009

amber_valletta

The 35-year-old model and actress is collaborating with the Los Angeles-based Monrow contemporary sportswear brand to launch her own apparel collection, which is called Amber Valletta for Monrow. The line will launch at retail in November and will be shown to buyers at the upcoming Intermezzo trade show in New York.

Valletta said when she was introduced to Monrow’s founding designers, Michelle Wenke and Megan George, through mutual friends, the connection was clear and she knew she wanted to work with them in some capacity. The result, she said, is a full collection of contemporary sportswear that includes tissue-thin T-shirts and tanks for easy layering; day dresses that easily can be dressed up for evening events.

Wenke said the color palette of navy, cream, black, light gray and pale blush with accents of silver and gold are meant to be subdued, so the details in the clothing stand out. The collection wholesales from $65 to $80, with the occasional higher-end item, which would wholesale for about $600.

isaac-mizrahi

Fashion reality star Isaac Mizrahi is partnering with QVC. Isaac will be creating a special lifestyle collection called “Isaac Mizrahi Live” for the network. The collection will bring Mizrahi’s touch to all QVC categories, from apparel to handbags, shoes, jewelry and home decor and kitchen accessories.

The designer and the network have reached a long-term deal, which will kick off with a show featuring the designer in December, though a specific date is not confirmed.

The collection is promised to be very Isaac, which means that the designer is not selling his name on the project but will be closely working on the lines.

Mizrahi is not a strange land when it comes to collaboration, we remember the Target collection to the Bergof Goodman.

In addition to his own line, Isaac Mizrahi New York, he is now creative director of the better-priced Liz Claiborne New York label, and co-host the successfull Bravo Series “The Fashion Show” along with Kelly Rowland.
