Tommy Hilfiger Fall Winter 2011 Men’s Collection

Friday February 10, 2011 – The Lion – 62 west 9th street

Why women are attracted to the “rebel” but always end up with the “nice guy“ may be one of life’s little mysteries, yet rarely does one ever speak about the sophisticated rebel; the gregarious intellectual that stands apart from his peers. After one look at Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall Winter 2011 Men’s collection, we know now that that man exists, he’s prep-school trained, lives in Williamsburg, and subscribes to the indie music narrative. Tired of bespoke uniforms, this man is nevertheless sartorial before he steps out of his apartment, but prefers for a more utilitarian look to restrictive clothing. Set in the speakeasy-esque bar restaurant, The Lion, the location paired well with the collection like a good wine to a meal.

The change in venue was a smart move, by showcasing the men’s line as having its own distinct identity. As a bevy of bartenders served ginger-infused cocktails to a flock of journalists canoodling in the dimly lit dining room, Tommy warmly greeted guests such as the ever-dapper, Ed Chadwick.

Promptly at 5:45, the show began with a statement on next season’s colors; Burgundy and AirForce blue are the new red and navy. Detailed use of autumn fabrics like wool, cashmere and flannel were made into cargo pants, turtlenecks, jackets, cardigans and tees. A navy wool black lapel single-breasted dinner jacket looked fit for the rocker that didn’t want to blend in with the “formal wear” crowd. Longer silhouettes came in the form of khaki, pilot blue trenches and grey wool tonal stripe toggle coats. A granite-camo knitted cowl with svelte burgundy lining blended comfort and ruggedness while a claret red cotton corduroy pants looked casually elegant. Wine and resin stained penny loafers and boat shoes added a sense of refinement to even the most leisurely of looks. You couldn’t help feeling after the presentation that the Tommy man has gained a sense of confidence and wisdom that comes with age.

Yet, for all the tailoring that portends sophistication, you get the sense that his confidence and youthful spirit appear in the most beguiling of ways. Shop Tommy Hilfiger via tommy.com
