Damir Doma Fall Winter 2011 Collection

Wednesday March 2, 2011 – Grand Palais – Galerie Sud-Est

Damir Doma’s innate skill at juxtaposing opposing elements seems to always give way to an undeniable beauty that is unique to the budding designer. Take his latest women’s Fall 2011 collection, which took platforms from his latest men’s show and incorporated them into a minimalist, feminine silhouette; the result is nothing short of a strong and independent woman with a distinct identity all her own. Nods to asian culture and even a few tribal references were shown through the use of sharp, clean lines. Models appeared like an army of fragile statutes, donning dark lipstick, marble-white makeup, and netted skullcaps – an homage to the romantic icons of Deborah Turbeville’s pictures.

The designer described this collection as being “tri-dimensional”, with new length and width proportions. Playing with sportswear-y elements, the show opened with a cropped hybrid tuxedo kimono vest and cropped legging combo. Note the tuxedo’s satin collar signature; a major detail that is featured in many looks throughout the collection.

In swift progression, striking, minimalist numbers erupted into austere wilderness. The pieces included a sheathed leopard printed pony-skin dress enveloped in shaggy mongolian fur, followed by a Lurex-shot knit sweater with a pair of Amazonian bicep-accenting copper cuffs. Another unique piece was a sleeved cape that floated off the model’s shoulder in mustard silk and mocha suede.

For the final looks, Damir goes back to black and to his signature’s silhouette with a flowy, tunic vest. A brilliant, longline tuxedo silhouette, fittingly closed the severely bold and powerful show.
