Tuesday November 2nd, 2010 – Atelier Richelieu – Paris

Democractic fashion might sound like an oxymoron to most; many of the prettiest and most coveted pieces in fashion carry a prohibitive pricetag that’s only accessible to a select few. But when H&M teamed up with Alber Elbaz, they sought to level the fashion playing field. Taking design codes from the Lanvin runway, the house’s effortlessly chic DNA with a side of whimsy has been transformed into accessibly priced, highly wearable pieces without a single hint of compromise. In essence, Christmas is coming early for fashion addicts.

At the Paris presentation, we were delighted to see that the attention to detail was not lost in the collection and many pieces looked practically “runway ready”. Ruffled one shoulder dresses, men’s daywear tuxedos, leopard print escarpins and a bedazzled set of clutches and accessories were more than one could have hoped for, but the price tag was perhaps the best part; Lanvin pieces range start $25 and go up to $250 for higher-end pieces. (And no, we didn’t forget to add an extra zero in there).

Champagne bubbling in hand, french journalists were given a taste of Alber’s vision with an overhead display of the Lanvin <3 H&M promotional video featuring Natasha Poly. Ironically enough, the video’s message and the salon’s festive atmosphere made quite the impact on a few; a handful quipped that for “Reveillon”, they don’t want to make resolutions, they just want Lanvin.

“Alber Elbaz is so extremely skilled; it’s so rare to work with someone who is so attentive and involved in everything. He is creating and styling all the time, it’s like this never-ending imagination. Elbaz is quite unconventional in the way he tries to find new solutions and he fights for his own vision. I admire him, he’s a real artist.” Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M.
