Phoebe Philo has been successful at re-inventing Celine ready to wear, but her ability of creating appealing classic handbag over the past few seasons might have highly contributed to the house success. Having made fashion hits out of a leather box bag on a long strap an ornately trimmed shopping tote (not to mention launching a thousand copycats at nearly every street corner).
For Fall 2011 Celine turned its sites on two traditional accessory staples: the frame satchel and the flat clutch. While at first the flat clutch appeared to be a clutch it is in fact a folio ipad organizer.
Celine’s handbag aesthetic works so well because it follows Philo’s love for belgium designer and their disciplined traditionalism. The philosophy is to strip shapes down to their most basic components. Considering Phoebe’s phobia for logos what would happens if she takes the gig at Louis Vuitton, where logo is king. Meanwhile the minimalist method has proved being incredibly successful for Celine, and these bags will no doubt continue that streak.
