J. Mendel Fall Winter 2012 Collection

Wednesday February 15, 2012 – Theatre – Lincoln Center

For fall 2012, Gilles Mendel delivered a fresh dose of fur, fashion and fun. After last season’s foray into more casual looks (a departure for the designer given his upper-class clientele) this season’s uptown girls meets downtown chic translated into a collection for all ages. The first series of monochromatic looks showed off the designer’s skill at mastering over 8 different furs, pairing them with crocodile textures and shearling for an affluent effect. A black, long haired shawl draped over a croc bodice with a knife-pleated sheer chiffon skirt looks effortlessly stunning on Arizona Muse. Waists were cinched with alligator belts while heavy craftsmanship was paid to the intricate beaded looks. Inspired by the works of Gaudi by way of Helmut Newson’s work, Gilles explored the ideas of intricate “paneling” of textures and handcrafted details. This clearly resonated well with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who from the front row could be seen pointing at several looks, possibly choosing which ones they’ll be wearing to a future red carpet event.
