Backstage at Dolce & Gabbana Spring Summer 2013

September 23, 2012

Sunday September 23, 2013 - Metropol viale Piave, 24

To the sound of Domenico Modugno’s “Meraviglioso” contemporary sun kissed maidens in vintage style dresses waltzed down the catwalk in a thoroughly folkloristic setting. Prickly pear cacti set the scene as Sicily’s heritage was transformed into high fashion.
The concept behind the collection is summer in Sicily: the garments are destructured; yet maintain that high octane glamour, we all love about Dolce&Gabbana. The concept of holiday and holiday dressing is breathed through the collection, and reached a Milanese audience who missed the days spent by the beach. Sicily is the other leg of the tripod: from visual prints representing Moorish vases or the highly decorated wheels of traditional Sicilian carts made up colourful prints which epitomize summer, and the tastes and traditions of Sicily.
The visual prints for SS13 portray the Pupi- traditional marionettes clad in chivalric armour and iconic goatee, and the famous Caltagirone vases shaped in the forms of Moorish heads with turban and all. These prints are characteristically mixed and matched in an eye-popping mix of colour and humour.
Sun, sea and Sicily. This is exactly where Dolce&Gabbana have drawn inspiration from for their stripes. Looking and the traditional umbrellas and sun loungers, the thick horizontal stripes emphasize the new silhouettes; the full skirts, trumpets and a lines. The stripes, both textured and block colour are printed on silk organza, cotton brocade and simple cotton.
The accessories are where the traditions and colours of Sicily come alive: wicker platforms or low square heels. Embroidered raffia Dolce Bags and bucket bags with flowers or pompoms and Moorish printed wedges.
A plethora of cute vintage style bathing suits- printed, striped, bikinis, one pieces, even tankinies. Culottes, mini ruffled skirts and oversize bras finished the show in a joyous vintage beach mood.

Backstage at Ferragamo Menswear Spring 2013

June 24, 2012

Sunday June 24, 2012 – Palazzo Mezzanotte piazza Affari, 6

It doesn’t take a fashion critic to see that Ferragamo’s latest colorful collection looks playfully joyful without any of hint of taking itself too seriously. And maybe that’s for good reason; after Ferragamo’s store opening in New York, a Resort collection bowing at the Louvre, and the hiring of Kate Moss to take over Gisele Bundchen’s spokesmodel duties, it seems as if the Italian fashion house is undergoing its own renaissance moment. Extending that metaphor further to reality, the house of Salvatore is keen on imbuing its creations with a hint of art. For the men’s collection, David Hockney’s works served as the Pantone, with a bit of color blocking that had a Warholian charm.

Unlike last season’s fall collection, creative director Massimiliano Giornetti opted to break from the brand’s classic design codes and dive into new territory, namely sportswear and neoprene. A prime example of this experiment appeared by way of the very first look: a sea-blue caban with carrot-orange buttoned inset and a matching pair of blue fitted trousers and grey sneakers with yellow trim. The follow up was just as bold, as a pumpkin orange trench number with oversized turquoise and white piping pockets took the runway. Clearly this new Ferragamo man was not shy about getting noticed; but Giornettti was keen to take it all down a notch with just enough nods to sportswear and tailoring to make the models look naturally relaxed.

But it wouldn’t be a Ferragamo show without some sleek formalwear and Giornetti did not disappoint. Single breasted suits in orange with blue trim lapels, double breasted jackets in spearmint green, see-through cashmere sweaters overlaid on jacquard ties, and geometric print cardigans looked ideal for the sophisticated urbanite headed to the seashore for a weekend jaunt. Still, the collection was not purely a suit and tie affair, as Massimiliano took liberty to play with art as a concept, incorporating brush stroke stripes across sweaters and shirts, almost as if a painter had purposely left his work in a raw, unedited state. The style was even extended onto suit jackets with entire shoulder areas appearing as if the watercolor paints were still drying on a canvas.

By the last look, one got the sense that Giornetti has sketched out a men’s collection that is as bright and hopeful as the house’s future.

Ferragamo Pre-Fall 2012 Collection

January 21, 2012

Wednesday January 18, 2012 – Private Royal waiting lounge –  Milan’s Railway Station

Ferragamo has the brilliant and original idea to present his Pre-Fall 2012 at Milan’s train station.
A station, the echo of trains softened in the refined atmosphere of an exclusive lounge. Waiting, an ultra-sophisticated woman, naturally elegant in her daytime clothes with the intricate play of printed checks, lozenge and patchwork. On her knees a beauty case, square but soft, made of precious skins.

The Ferragamo girl wears a soft brimmed fedora graced by a feather, an astrakhan-lined leather and python cape and a key by her neck, as a pendant or the buckle of a blouse.

For the evening, brush-stroke check print on silk twill plays with velvet, while pleated chiffon cocktail dresses are enlivened by magnificent geometrical lace embroidery in full colour.

The vibrant tones of the autumnal palette dictate the atmosphere of this voyage: red wine, purple and thyme green, lit up by the comforting softness of neutral hues like camel, tan and leather.

The entire collection is enriched by the luxury of exotic skins: from the Argyle sweater with suede, python and cashmere inlays, to the knitted dress with crocodile, python and ostrich piping, the exclusive allure of the suede suit with crocodile borders and the ostrich overcoat with a check flannel lining.

The spirit of travel is highlighted by the suede beauty cases with python and metal detailing on the padlock-style fastening. Skins, crafted with virtuosity, reversed and raw cut, generate forms that are simple yet constructed, either flat or geometric.

Dolce & Gabbana Spring Summer 2012 Collection

September 25, 2011

Sunday September 25, 2011 – Metropol viale Piave, 24

The imaginary movie created to describe the Dolce & Gabbana Spring Summer 2012 collection is set up in a small town in the South of Italy, decorated for festivities. Everything recalls the typically Italian joyful spirit: from the distinctive illuminations that adorn every street and the fragrances and tastes of Mediterranean food, down to the crochet that embellishes tablecloths.

Tomatoes, aubergine, courgette, onions and hot pepper prints brighten up the classic sheath dresses or dresses cut at the waist and ruched, tops, shorts and deconstructed jackets. All clothes are made in organza or cotton, mixed with crochet in pastel colours such as light blue, peach, beige and nude.

The exuberant sensuality of the Italian culinary culture and of the traditions are also expressed in the accessories made of pasta and little tomatoes, onions and small Madonnas that decorate shoulder bags, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. On the other hand, bags and shoes are made of that typical intertwined plastic that recalls the chairs one can find at the bars in all the small towns in the South of Italy, where friends gather.

Come the night, the black brocade dresses and jackets are covered with shiny stones of the same colour, while the sparkling geometries of the illuminations that decorate the streets are recreated through embroideries made of multi-coloured crystals on lace dresses. For the finale, bodysuits embroidered with glittering multi-coloured stones that shine like fireworks.

Redken Creative Consultant Guido created a wet chignon for Saturday’s Spring 2012 Bottega Veneta show in Milan.

Bottega Veneta’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection is very sophisticated so we wanted to off-set it with an easy, sexy, summery hairstyle.  The style is uncomplicated and is something that anyone can create themselves and wear. ” Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Jil Sander Spring Summer 2012 Backstage Beauty

September 24, 2011

Redken Creative Consultant Guido created a timeless look at Jil Sander on Saturday.

“In the true DNA of the brand, this is a rich woman’s hairdo that looks almost so perfect, it has no period.  It could be from the future but also nods to the past.  It’s inspired by the 1950′s but then becomes mid-century modern which makes it such a sculptured look. It’s very helmut-like; the shape and texture makes it look as though it’s stuck on. ”  Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Products Used: rootful 06 root lifting sprayforceful 23 super strength finishing spray

Create the Look:

Apply rootful 06 root lifting spray liberally to damp hair to give it some texture.

Section the hair and blow-dry.

Backcomb each section to create volume and height, then brush hair back away from the face and create a ponytail, securing an elastic at the very end of it.

With the help of a foam roller, roll the hair starting from the ends, tucking it under and pinning it

Layer forceful 23 hairspray to create the glossy, helmut-like shape and to smooth the hair.

PRADA Spring Summer 2012 Backstage Beauty

September 22, 2011

Thursday September 22, 2011 – via Fogazzaro, 36

Redken Creative Consultant Guido created hair with a bit of an edge at Prada today, which offset the beautiful Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

“The look for Prada today is a bit like a girl curling her hair and putting in a bobby pin before going out at night- she did her hair herself.  It’s kind of  homemade, not finished, the hair of a woman with a David Lynch darkness– she’s more night than day with her hair.  But she is overall a Prada woman because there is a refinement to her quirkiness.”  Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Products Used:  Satinwear 02 ultimate blow-dry lotion,  Hot sets 22 thermal setting mistFashion work 12 versatile working spray

Create the Look:

Apply satinwear 02 to damp hair and rough dry.

Create a clean left side part and secure with a bobby pin on the right side.

Tuck hair behind the ears.

Section the back and apply hot sets 22 to hair and then curl sections using a 1” iron.

Leave the curls as is (don’t brush out).

On the crown of the head, apply fashion work 12 to create a slicker look and ensure no fly-away’s.
