Coveting her current job and fearing the wrath of La Wintouress, Carine Roitfeld downplayed the revived rumors of her taking over VOGUE USA in an interview with CNN International. The interview is set to air this Wednesday at 8:30AM GMT (or about breakfast for Anna, given that she starts her day around 3AM EST).
Besides putting the kibosh on the ongoing rumors, she gleefully reminds the world that Paris is still the fashion capital and Vogue Paris is its Maison Blanche. And in true coquette esprit, Carine blissfully mentions:
“I’m very happy at French Vogue to be able to do everything — almost everything — I want in the magazine,” she said. “It would be too political at American Vogue for me. And I’m not sure I’m talking enough good English to work there.”
While VOGUE USA caters to a much larger audience, Vogue Paris still remains France’s most highly circulated fashion magazine. And while France’s population is comparable to California, Carine has successfully transformed the venerable magazine into a provocative fashion media empire that is stretching beyond the affluent and gaining a younger, more diverse audience.

And what’s driving that success? Simply put: Carine’s sweet charm. Ask any PR rep at a major Paris fashion house who’s ever worked with Carine and they’ll tell you she’s probably the sweetest editor to ever to grace their showrooms. In fact, she’s usually the nicest person in the entire office, which is saying a lot in French society. It’s also that same gentillesse and joie de vie that has been successfully translated onto the pages of the magazine.
However, no sooner upon highlighting Carine’s personable qualities, the piece targets A-Dubs, with the reporter referring to her as being “old”.
“Wintour has yet to announce any plans to retire but her advancing age — she’s 60 this year — has stoked speculation that after more than 20 years in the role it might be time to leave.”
It’s now being reported that following the taping of the interview, the CNN reporter was whisked offset and admitted into the Witness Fashion Protection Program.
