Tom Ford Premieres ‘A Single Man’ in Milan
January 12, 2010

Tom Ford’s Golden Globe-nominated “A Single Man” premiered in Milan on Monday night
“Milan has a wonderful energy and I love the fact that it’s so close to the mountains and you can go skiing every weekend,” said Ford.
Donatella Versace loves “films from the past, especially black-and-white ones with good lighting.” Margherita Missoni, Brian Atwood, Elio Fiorucci and Rosanna Armani also attended the screening, though most eyes were on model Jon Kortajarena, who plays Carlos in the film. He also appears in Ford’s men’s eyewear campaign, so he knows a little bit about the designer’s work ethic. “He really knows what he wants,” said Kortajarena. “He’s very easy to work with, plus he can be very funny.”

The heat was on at Monday night’s CFDA Fashion Awards, as designers and VIPs crowded the area behind the New York Public Library. “This is already fun,” said Francisco Costa, who took home the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award for Calvin Klein Collection. Tom Ford won the Menswear Designer of the Year Award, while Tory Burch was honored as Accessory Designer of the Year. Candy Pratts Price received this year’s Eugenia Sheppard Award. The International Award went to Dries Van Noten, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg was given the CFDA’s Board of Directors’ Special Tribute. The Swarovski awards for emerging talent, meanwhile, went to Kate and Laura Mulleavy for Rodarte for Womenswear, Scott Sternberg for Band of Outsiders for Menswear and Philip Crangi for Accessory Design.
But the fashion crowd paid homage to one of their own in another way as many attendees showed up in versions of the late Yves Saint Laurent’s le smoking. “When I have something important to do I always wear a white smoking,” explained Carolina Herrera, the night’s recipient of the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.
CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg chose to wear a jacket Saint Laurent crafted 30 years ago. “I had a dress made for tonight but then I called my country home and asked them to send over all of my Yves Saint Laurents,” she said.
Of course, some people are accustomed to forgoing frocks on such occasions. “The last time I wore a dress was to a friend’s wedding when I was 19,” said Fran Leibowitz, the evening’s emcee.

• Tom Ford opened his first store outside the U.S. in Osaka, Japan. He plans to open 87 more locations in Asia over the next decade. Go, Ford, go! [WWD]
• High fashion is not cut for women with big breasts — since obviously those ladies come off as trashy. Nonetheless, 3,000 British women said the push-up bra was the greatest fashion invention of all time. Seems Anna Wintour was right about designers being out of touch. [Telegraph]
• Marchesa has confirmed its bridal collection, which is what everyone suspected Georgina Chapman would be working on after her wedding to movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, for which she designed her own dress. [Fashion Week Daily]
• The Chanel Mobile Art exhibit will plunk down in New York in September for Fashion Week. It will probably land wherever it can fit, since it’s so darn huge. Also, it takes two weeks to dismantle the structure and three weeks to assemble it. But do we really expect something less than high maintenance from Karl Lagerfeld? [Racked]
• Keepin’ it green as usual, Stella McCartney is opening six stores in India with the same distribution company that’s helping her save Bengali tigers. [WWD]
• Maidenform now makes a backless bra. It beats those stick-on ones, but still has straps. [My Fashion Life]
• Kylie Minogue will wear Jean Paul Gaultier for her European tour “KylieX2008.” Gaultier also dressed Madonna for her 2006 “Confessions” tour and is rumored to be costuming a fall production of Snow White. [WWD]
• A luxury-pajama store on Madison Avenue called Arthur opened a month ago and is expected to make $1 million in its first year. Because sleep just wouldn’t be sleep without $200 pj’s. [WWD]
