Mugler Spring Summer 2013 Menswear Collection

Wednesday June 27, 2012 – Espace Commines

It wasn’t too long ago when creative director Nicola Formichetti was to the middle of working on the latest collection while simultaneously live-streaming the creative process to fans on Ustream.com and posting pre-show images on Tumblr and Facebook. This year he decided to do away with all of the social networking technologies and opted  instead to dive back into basics, literally.

Using the Mugler avant-garde archetype for their narrative, Formichetti and Romain Kremer  decided to adopt a more aquatic approach to how they created then you Mugler man. Seafoam green, coral oranges, and scale-like prints served as palette points, giving looks a fresh, young feel. After revamping their entire tailoring staff, the design team was able to highlight the collection’s refined sophistication by way of suits. Single breasted suits and lapel-less jackets showed a newfound attention to fine suiting and craftsmanship. The appearance of external fins on short shorts as well as the elongation and sharpening of edges on oversized, collarless Oxford shirts are standout, collection-defining pieces. Chest revealing slits on tank tops, while serving as wanton eye-candy, added a nice touch of sex appeal into very consumer friendly pieces.

Though Formichetti and company took a step back with this collection in order to refocus their efforts, the result is nothing short of a leap beyond imagination that somehow remains anchored in reality.
