“Ghost in the clothes” is how designer Dai Fujiwara described the ethereal motif infused into his latest collection. Indeed, blanc-et-noir elements were apparent in the clothes and makeup; a sublime micro-pleated two-piece suit with a degradé black collar on Edythe Hughes showed off the house’s skill at manipulating textures with impressive detail while brushes of black-white Shisheido eyeliner around the eyes gave models an other-wordly appearance. Macabre made Rodarte a skyrocketing success, but Miyake takes it a step further by infusing hand-crafted details and impressive in-house fabric manipulation to the point of producing a balanced and delicate collection.
Three years of fabric research produced moiré clothing that are the result of different colored, nearly transparent pieces that are layered lightly and finely to the point of translucency. Mesh tops over cargo pants and an earth-tone short tube top showed the designers curiosity for playing with new silhouettes. A-line white silk dresses with black-tone bleeding running down the center or paired white micro-pleats fish-scales looked stunning. Plush oversized leather messenger bags and perforated leather flats beautifully complimented the collection. The final walk featured a phalanx of sunglasses-toting models, a bold announcement that Miyake will be launching its own line of eponymous eyewear in 2011.
