Monday February 15th 2016 – Park Avenue Armory
Guests filtering into the Park Ave. Armory did a double take, believing they were boarding a ship on the West Side pier, as they took their seats on the deck of the T.H. Atlantic cruise liner. As attendees walked past the shuffle-board bow below the billowing smoke stacks, one could nary avoid thinking the obvious: “Ship just got real”.
The blue light from the set was very cinematic; the kind of light you get when you’re in the middle of the ocean at night. Piles of trunks were placed around the runway, emphasizing the spirit of travel.
“This collection is about my love for nautical, anything nautical. But it’s about a transatlantic journey, a voyage, mixing vintage with modern, about sexy, about fun with a real sense of humor. With luxurious fabrics, great shapes, new shapes and relevant fashion for this moment.” said Tommy backstage.
Picking up from his last showing, Hilfiger continues to pioneer fashion’s foothold in new multimedia. This time, Shea Marie and Caroline Vreeland connected with fans via Periscope, live blogging backstage moments, Tommy’s interview, celebrity sightings and the show.
Model Gigi Hadid officially launched TH’s snapchat channel, providing exclusive access, right before hitting the runway. Even more novel was the introduction of the “Instapit”, where special guests posted live, up-close runway shots right alongside their media-riser kin.
The nautical world has always been part of Tommy’s DNA, but yesterday he presented a whole new vision of the feminine silhouette by mixing nautical and military details. His take on luxury ready to wear can be seen in the smallest of details. Italian-handcrafted Venetian embroideries added a dimension of sophistication to fresh, youthful frocks.
The show opened with Gigi wearing a flee-week print bias cut dress, rocking no less than a tiara to match her gold loafer pumps. Hailey Baldwin and Victoria Secret Taylor Hill took the show helm with their respective navy bonded wool cape on a white chiffon dress and white chiffon sailor top with a leather skirt ensemble.
Tommy continues to boldly wade in new, unchartered social-media waters. But if his strong Fall showing is any indication, he already holds a commanding lead amongst his peers.
